Thanks to Maygan at Maybe Frugal for sharing the info. that Safeway has a NEW coupon policy. There are some exciting changes!!
You can view the entire list HERE, but here are some of the highlights:
4. Coupons cannot be applied against the free item received in any offer where a customer buys one or more items to get one or more items free. (You will not be able to use 2 coupons on a Buy One Get One FREE items)
8. Safeway will accept valid manufacturer coupons that display another retailer’s logo or name. (You will be able to use the manufacturer’s coupons that occasionally show up in the Albertson’s ad, as long as they are manufacturers coupons)
9. Safeway will accept valid Catalina manufacturer coupons that are issued to a customer by another retailer. (This one makes me happy, excited, and down right giddy! We can use Catalina’s that we get from other stores.)
Internet Printed Coupons:
16. We gladly accept internet printed coupons. The same manufacturer and store coupon rules above apply to all internet printed coupons.
17. Internet printed coupons must scan at checkout.
18. Internet printed coupons must have serial numbers and follow an industry-standard format.
19. Manufacturer internet printed coupons must clearly indicate that they are a manufacturer coupon and have a valid manufacture address on the printed coupon.
20. We will not accept “free product” internet printed manufacturer coupons.
(They did away with that silly rule that the internet printed coupons could only be up to 50% of the value of a product.)
I would recommend printing out the Safeway coupon policy and taking it with you to the store, it may be awhile before cashiers are informed of the changes. Honestly, I have never had a problem redeeming coupons at Safeway, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
So, what are your thoughts? I personally think the new policy is an improvement (minus the BOGO coupon policy), but Safeway rarely has buy one get one free sales so it’s not that big of a deal. For all of you that had problems redeeming internet coupons this should be a big improvement for you.
Thanks again, Maygan!

The ‘other retailer’ coupons are intriguing, since Target releases some really good target only food coupons sometimes. Interesting!
So, I have a question regarding #17 saying “internet coupons must scan at checkout”. Quite often my printed coupons from coupons.com or redplum.com or whatever do not scan and they have to manually enter the numbers. Are they not willing to enter them manually now?
Does this mean they will accept Register Rewards from Walgreens? Because technically they are a manufacturer coupon! THAT would be awesome!
Sarah – I thought they always had that policy that the coupons needed to scan, so I am not sure on that one. Most times they should scan. If that happens a lot for you, it may be a problem with your printer not printing them well enough.
Christy – The Register Rewards to say “manufacturers coupon” on them, so they should work. I agree, it would be awesome!
If anyone tries out using the Register Rewards at Safeway let us know how it goes!
