I have had numerous reports today of people telling me that the toys at their stores have gone down to 50% off! Woo hoo! This means that the 75% off cannot be that far behind! With this information, I can make an educated guess (I got my degree at Target University) as to when I think the toys will go 75% off. This is just a guess, but I believe they will go 75% off on Thursday, July 28th (Wednesday, July 27th if you store marks down on Wednesdays).
Here are a couple of reasons why I believe this to be true:
- Last year the markdown took place on July 28th and 29th
- Target usually marks down each department every 2 weeks, since they marked toys down to 50% off today, they will probably go 75% off in two weeks.
Here are some things you will want to do:
- I would check your store next week just to make sure the big markdown hasn’t taken place. There is a chance that a few items may go 75% off before the bulk of the toys go 75% off.
- Make sure you “like” Thrifty and Thriving on Facebook, I can post there instantly while I am at the store. Plus, many readers post directly to Facebook with what they have found at their store.
- Check the stores in your area now, so you know which location you want to head to first (if you plan on visiting multiple stores) This will help you make your game plan!
- Gather up any coupons that may be available. When I bought the single Hot Wheels cars, a coupon printed out for $4 off a $15 Hot Wheels or Matchbox purchase. There are lots of Hot Wheels & Matchbox items on clearance, so this would be a good coupon to use.
Please understand I do not have any “inside” information, so this really is just a guess. I honestly don’t even think the Target employees know for sure when the markdown will take place. I will be sure to post as soon as I hear anything! If see the toys go 75% off, feel free to post on the Thrifty & Thriving Facebook page or shoot me an email at thriftyandthriving@gmail.com.

You are definetly right with them not knowing, i worked for target from 01-03 in every department including flow team (shelf stockers), and i worked with the markdown and planogram team. I never knew what i was marking down or changing on the aisle until the day of. If it was a huge change like switching for halloween or back to school we would only know a day or two in advance.

Thanks for that confirmation Brandon, that is exactly what I thought, that they don’t know until the day of. I appreciate your comment!

In other words…don’t harass Target employees. They know as much as we do. Some people probably needed a reminder of that 😉

I noticed that the season/outdoor/picnic stuff was 30% off at beaverton target but I went just a cpl miles down the road to the hillsboro, OR store and it was all 50% off including gladd gallon storage bags and press & seal. Right on!

Not to sound stupid but why are they putting toys on clearance? Is it regular toys or summer toys, or what exactly? Sorry..I just wasn’t aware they were doing this but I want to be in on it! lol

@Emily – believe it or not, they are clearing out the “old” toys to make room for Christmas stuff. They do it twice a year – once in the summer and once after the holidays (I believe).

@Emily, you can read all about why they clear out a major portion of the toys in both January and July in this post here:

If anyone is looking for any coupons for some of the clearance toys I have a heads up! Yesterday I was at Target (Spokane) and noticed they had a lot of Chuck the Truck toys on the markdown. Once of the things that was marked down was a Chuck and Friends DVD with a little Chuck the Truck attached. It was on clearance for $6. My son begged me for it and I noticed it said on the package that there were coupons inside. When we opened it at home I found some great high value coupons for 3 different clearance toys, including $5 off the Rumblin Chuck truck that seems to be everywhere!

Since the majority of input here relates to west coast Target stores, I thought I would comment from the east coast. I was in a Target store yesterday (7/13/11) and noticed several toys on clearance at 50% off as well. I’m hoping the ones I’m interested in last until the 75% off sale occurs.
Technically, since we’re on the east coast – our sales will begin 3 hrs sooner than the west coast stores! Provided they all begin on the same day.
Thanks for providing input on expected clearance dates. This site is a big help!

@Emily- Last year I bought things on clearance that I saw back on the shelves at normal prices in Oct/Nov. I got Tonka Bounceback racers for $8/ea and Geotrax sets for $6-7 last year. I’ve been such a Target “stalker” this week!!!
I was at Lacey Target Wednesday and the summer stuff was labeled 30% off but the items I bought rang up at 50% off. Haven’t been back since Wednesday but toys were still at 30-50% off.

Thanks for the tips, ladies! I went to my Target in North Texas last night and all of the outdoor/seasonal items were 50% off. The ice cream makers said they were on sale for $26 but when I scanned them, they were $14.99 so make sure to scan something if you are interested! I was able to pick up a ton of paper lanterns, plates, cups and napkins for a birthday party I am hosting at the end of the month. While I wish I could have gotten them for 75 % off, I was too scared to wait to see if there would be anything left by then. 50% off was good for me for these items as I’d rather pay 1/2 than full price!! I got the large lanterns for $1.00, the two-packs of medium and small for $1.00, some big serving bowls for $2.49, napkins and small plates for $.75 ea., and plastic cups for $1.49. I’m waiting to see if I can get a plastic tray when they go 75 off as I’m too cheap to pay $7 for it 1/2 off!!! I’m also holding my breath that there will be some of the toys I really want left at 75% off. I’ve been trying to get one of those ironing boards and iron sets at 75% off for 2 years now. They are $8 something 500% off – gonna try hard this year!!! So fun!!!

Hi all! Just got back from Target in Northeast Ohio. The summer seasonal area is now 75% off! I got a snow cone maker for $5 and a Sunbeam blender for $5.99. Also lots of kids stuff- $1.50 for a 4 piece swimming floaty stuff set, kids canvas folding chair in a bag- $2.50. They have storage totes for $2.99 and glass iced tea pitchers for $5. Lots of great stuff. As I type I want to go back for more!!! Good Luck! I also noticed a few toy items on clearance, but am so excited for this big sale!
