Make your own Washer Pendant Necklaces

by Christy on April 25, 2012

Today I am sharing how to make Washer Pendant Necklaces. These are super easy to make and also very inexpensive. The turn out super cute too!

Here are the supplies you will need:

The first thing you will want to do, is cut the circles to match your washers.  You can cut them so a little of the silver shows on the edge (this is what I did) or you can cover the entire washer.  You can cut them with circle punches, by hand or with a Silhouette (that is what I used).

Once your shapes are cut, using the paintbrush, you will want to add Modge Podge to the front of the Washer.

You will then want to add your circle cut out directly on top of the Modge Podge you applied to the washer.

Next, you will want to use the paintbrush to apply Modge Podge over the top of the paper.   You will want to paint it on so it’s smooth.   Once you are done, let it sit until it is dry.

Once the Modge Podge is dry, you will cover the front of the washer with Diamond Glaze, this will give it a nice glassy look.  You will want to check for any air bubbles during this step, if you see any you will want to remove them, I use a needle to get rid of them.  If you want a thicker glass look, you can let it dry and then add another coat of Diamond Glaze.   Once covered with Diamond Glaze you will need to let it dry for several hours.

Next, you will add the cording to the washer.  To do this, you will want to cut your cording, I usually cut it a couple inches longer than I need it, just for safe measure.   Once you have your cord, fold it in half.

Take the part where it is folded and thread it up through the center of the washer.

Take the ends of the cording and thread it up through the loop that you just put through the center of the washer. Keep pulling the cording through until it is tight.

Once you pull the cording through, your final product should look like the image above.

Your final step will be adding the claps.   Once you have done that, you are done!

Here are a few examples of some of the finished necklaces.   I used lighter colored papers on these with white cording.

Here are some samples with black cords.

The inspiration for these necklaces came from Janice’s Mash-Up.

Do you brush the diamond glaze on like you did the podge?

R. W. Newton April 25, 2012 at 8:10 pm

I LOVE it when you share your creative projects!! Please share even more of them! I wish, too, that you’d come to visit your fans here in the Atlanta area!

Christy April 25, 2012 at 8:15 pm

@kellis No, you don’t brush on the diamond glaze, you just squeeze it on. It will have a nice rounded look to it. It is cloudy when it goes on and it will dry clear.

Very cute!

can you explain how you place the cord tips and clasps? Also where were they purchased at? Thank you so much. I am excited to try this.

Christy April 26, 2012 at 8:16 am

@Rebekah There are so many different type of clasps, but these are the ones I used (I am using links from Amazon to give you an idea of what they look like, but I purchased mine at Michael’s)

You put these on the end of the cording and clamp them down with needle Nose Pliers:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CSNL8G/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thebarg-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002CSNL8G

Then you will attach a jump ring at the end of each of the clasps you just attached to the cording:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019VEFUU/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thebarg-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0019VEFUU

Once you have those on, you will just attach a hook on of of the ends, you can use something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003H7S32U/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thebarg-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003H7S32U

You should be able to find the jewelry clasps at Michaels, Joann’s or even Walmart. If you go to Michaels or Joann’s, you can explain to them what you need and the employees should be able to point you in the right direction.

These are adorable! I love the look of the lighter scrapbook paper and white cording. Thanks for the tutorial!

You said you cut your circles with a Silhouette. Is that a type of cutter? If so is it a hand tool or an electronic type tool? Thanks.

Where do you get the diamond glaze? I checked Michaels and they didn’t have it. Is there a product that does the same thing as the diamond glaze?

Hannah May 14, 2012 at 5:57 pm

I am having a hard time finding a way to cut out the center circle so that it is a nice, crisp cut. A standard hole punch is too small and I haven’t found anything else that is the right size. Any suggestions for someone who doesn’t scrapbook and doesn’t have all those fancy tools?
Thanks so much!

Christy May 14, 2012 at 7:35 pm

@Hannah If you have an exacto knife, you can lay the paper down on something you can cut on and then lay the washer on top. Run the tip of the exacto knife around the inside of the circle and it should make for a smooth cut.

There are also circle punches that should be about the middle size of the circle, you can pick one up at Michaels with a 40% off coupon and I would think it should only run you $4 or less.

If you have a scrapbook store in your area, they often have punches and tools that they allow customers to use for free when you buy paper at their store.

Just a few suggestions!

It might be cute to do “birthstone” colors…blue for september, red for January etc, and where them like charms for each of your kids or family members….

Heema Nigam June 6, 2012 at 9:27 pm

Christy June 6, 2012 at 9:59 pm

@Heema Modge Podge can be found at any craft or fabric store. You may even be able to find it at walmart.

Janet July 15, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Where do you buy the diamond glaze? Is there something other than the diamond glaze that can be used?

Gabby September 1, 2012 at 9:22 am

Where do you get the diamond glaze or can you use another thing?

Christy September 1, 2012 at 9:34 am

@Gabby Diamond Glaze can be bought at a craft store, or you can order online from the links I shared in the post.

Andrea September 25, 2012 at 2:22 pm

OMG(osh) I’m going to have to add this to my list for crafts to do with my little girl. She will love it! These would even make cute gifts, you could make them to match the receivers personality.

Melanie October 23, 2012 at 7:16 pm

What size were the washers and your circle punch?
Thanks!

Shirley November 3, 2012 at 6:34 pm

What do you do to the back of them?

Christy November 3, 2012 at 7:27 pm

@Shirley. I don’t do anything on the back side, I just leave them blank.

Dennis November 10, 2012 at 8:27 am

How long should your cord be.

Dennis

Christy November 10, 2012 at 8:46 am

The size of the cord will vary on who you are making these for. We made some for younger girls so we wanted those shorter. I just used my own neck to get a feel for how long I wanted to make them. I have given them all away as gifts, so I can’t measure them to see exactly how long that was. Sorry!

Angie November 27, 2012 at 8:39 am

I have looked for diamond glaze for years!!! I still haven’t found a craft store that carries it…I’ve looked at Hobby lobby, Michaels, Wal-mart, Joanna…nothing…:(

Michael’s carry’ s a product that will do the same thing as the Diamond Glaze, I used it and it’s awesome!! but I added a link for amazon to let you see what it is your looking for it’s normally in the GLUE Section at Michael’s.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dgarden&field-keywords=+Jewelry+pendant+Gel

Jackie January 5, 2013 at 4:34 pm

I found that the amazon link is for a site called http://www.createforless.com and they have BOTH!! products but the Aleene’s Jewlery Pendant Gel (actually classified as a glue) is also on this site.. and cheaper, and it looks like a great crafting site!!
I also wanted to mention that I added SMALL gemstones and X-fine glitter to these necklaces BEFORE you use the Diamond glaze OR pendant gel and it covers nicely, just a little added BLING!

Marti January 22, 2013 at 11:23 pm

I love this and can’t wait to try it. May I feature your tutorial on my blog and link back to you?
Marti
