JCPenney announced that they would have a new pricing system in their stores starting February 1st, which would involve new everyday low prices. When I first heard about their new pricing strategy, I wasn’t all that excited, that was until I actually visited a JCPenney.
The part I love most about this new pricing is that there is still going to be markdowns, and it appears as if the markdowns are even lower than with their old pricing system. I love it when you can pick up clothing for your family at 80% off or more, and with their new system it looks like this will be very possible.

Here is how the new pricing works:
Everyday Prices (red) = The items with red price tags are their everyday prices, which they claim are always great. I believe these prices would be very similar to “sale” pricing, these prices are typically 40% less than the suggested retail price.
Month Long Values (white) = These products will have even better prices on items you need now. I am assuming this means that we will see lower prices on swimsuits during a month when we can actually use them, and not just at the end of the season.
Best Prices (blue) = This is JCPenney’s new version of their clearance pricing. New markdowns will happen on the first and third Friday of every month. These blue price tags are the ones that make me happy, they really have some amazing markdowns, where you can save over 90% off!!
Here is an example of one of the Best Prices (blue) that I found (Bellevue Square location):

I found a nice pair of Isotoner gloves.

The gloves have been marked down to only $3, which is a great price!

I just had to see what the retail price was, so I carefully peeled up the blue sticker to take a peek, and noticed they retailed for $40. That is over 90% off!!!
Here are a few other examples of some Best Prices I found (there were deals everywhere, I could have snapped over 50 pictures if I had the time):

Men’s solid shirts were marked down to only $2.

Men’s pajama bottoms were only $3, regularly $30, so these were 90% off. 90% off!! Oh man, I love a good deal!!

These bathrobes were only $10 and they retailed for $75. Plus, they were soft and fluffy!

Girls shirts for only $3.
Some of my thoughts:
- I really think I am going to love their “Blue” pricing, the other colors not as much, but it will be nice to know that when I head to JCPenney I will be able to pick up items that no longer have a hugely inflated retail price.
- I am thrilled that this means no more “Buy One, Get One 50% off sales” that JCPenney was very fond of doing, I hate those!
- Some prices do not automatically ring up at the register, they have to be adjusted down, so keep an eye on your items as they are ringing them up. Check your receipt when the transaction is complete.
- The selection might be really good now because the large amount of seasonal clearance they have, and they may not always have an abundance of “blue” priced items. I also think once more people understand that the markdowns happen on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month, these items will start selling quicker. Time will tell if I continue to love this new system.
I recommend heading in to JCPenney on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month to check out the deals for yourself, you (and your wallet) may be pleasantly surprised. I will start posting reminders for you the day before the big discounts are supposed to take place. If you find any great deals you are more than welcome to post photos of them on the Thrifty and Thriving Facebook page.
Have you checked out JCPenney recently? I would love to hear your thoughts.
