DISNEY

Before you purchase your Disneyland Theme Park tickets you will have to decide on a couple of things:

  • How many days you want to spend at the Parks?
  • Do you want to use the Park Hopper feature?

The cost per day goes down with each additional day you spend at the park.   Here is a break down for 1-Park tickets with a 1-day, 3-day or a 5-day pass.  These prices are for ages 10 and up.  (ages 3-9 will be cheaper). They also include a discount for purchasing your tickets online (prices at the gate will be higher).   These prices were valid as of June 2011.

  • 1-Day Ticket = $80 (cost per day is $80)
  • 3-Day Ticket = $199 (cost per day is $66)
  • 5-Day Ticket = $231 (cost per day is $46)

If you decide to add the Park Hopper feature to your tickets, the cost will be a little more.  The Park Hopper allows you to visit both Disneyland and California Adventure on the same day, so you can alternate between the 2 parks.  Since the 2 parks are so close to each other we enjoy this feature.   If you are trying to save money on your trip, you can easily just go with the one park a day ticket.  The price of a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket is $214, which is $14 more than the one-day park ticket.

If you plan on making more than one trip to Disneyland in a year, than you may want to go for an annual passport.  You can view the different yearly passport options and their prices on the Disney website.

Here are several options for picking up discount tickets to Disneyland:

California Residents:

Military Discount:

    • Disney Military Promotional Tickets can be purchased by active and retired U.S. military personnel for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends.
    • Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets cost $99 each
    • You can find all the details on this promotion HERE. They have extended the dates of this promotion until September 2012, you can find out more about the extension HERE.

Buy Ahead of time online:

  • If you are buying a 3-Day or longer Park Hopper ticket, you can get a discount for purchasing them online before you head to the parks.
  • Not only is it cheaper, but it’s also more convenient. If you choose the print at home option (which is FREE), you will just take the print out of your ticket to the gate and they will exchange it for a real park ticket. No waiting in the ticket line!
  • You can also choose to have your tickets mailed to you or picked up at will call, both of which have a $5 fee.

Buy Discount Tickets Online at GetawayToday.com:

GetawayToday.com offers discounted tickets for Disneyland.   You have the option of buying a package deal or individual tickets.

Buy a Package Deal:

  • You can do some research ahead of time and see if buying a package deal will save you money. I would price everything individually and then get a quote on a package price.  Don’t assume that just because it’s a package you are getting a good deal.
  • I recommend both Costco Travel and Getaway Today for Disneyland packages. The Costco package includes some extras like a character breakfast, so you will need to take that into account when you are pricing the package.
  • If you use Getaway Today, you may also want to check for discount codes at RetailMeNot.com.

Buy your tickets though City Pass:

  • When you buy through City Pass your are not only getting a discount on your Disneyland ticket, but you will also get other attractions at a discount too. (Sea World, Universal Studios, etc.)
  • You can check out the rates and other attractions available at City Pass to see if this would be a good option for you.

Get a Disney Visa Rewards Card:

  • I can only recommend this option if you pay the card off in full each month.   The amount you would pay in interest each month would not outweigh the benefits you receive.
  • I received a special offer that gave me a $200 Disney Gift Card for opening a Disney Visa Rewards account (HELLO! $200 in FREE Disney money!! I was all over this one)  They are currently offering a $100 statement credit.
  • You will earn 1% cash back for all the purchases you make with your card. The money is given to you in the form of a Disney Rewards card that can be redeemed at the on tickets, lodging, food or merchandise.   You could use the cash back to purchase your Disney Park tickets. It doesn’t sound like much, but it can really add up. I use the Visa to pay all of my monthly bills and then pay it off at the end of each month.
  • The card also give you other perks and discounts.

Take Advantage of the Albertsons Gift Card Promo (though 6/21/11):

  • Albertsons is currently running a gift card promo where you will earn a FREE $20 Albertsons Catalina for every $100 in gift cards you purchase. The great news is they sell Disney gift cards!
  • Learn more about the promo HERE, and also check THIS POST for some important updates.

Check Your Grocery Stores for the Park Hoppers with the old pricing:

  • Several grocery stores sell the Park Hopper passes, you can find them in with the gift cards.
  • Since Disney has recently had a price increase on admission prices (on 6/12/11), if you find some of the Park Hoppers with the old pricing, you an pick those up and pay a lower cost than current ticket prices.

Do you know of a way to get Disneyland Park tickets at a discount that I haven’t mentioned here?   Please leave a comment and let us know your special tips or tricks for scoring Disneyland tickets for less.

Update to Albertsons Disney Gift Card Promo

by Christy on June 14, 2011

I mentioned earlier this week that I was using the money we have budgeted for our Disney vacation to pick up Disney gift cards. Right now, when you buy $100 gift cards at Albertsons, you will get a $20 Catalina coupon to use at Albertsons.

The Park Hopper passes did not generate the Catalina, so my store manager called to check on it, and he found out that since they were park passes, they did not consider them to be gift cards. I said the best route would be to pick up $50 Disney gift cards. The only problem is that if you purchase your tickets online, you could only use 3 gift cards at a time, which would not cover the full cost of Park Hopper tickets. You would have to pay the rest with a credit card.   I found out that there is an even better option, thanks to reader Jenn. (I seriously love my readers – I always learn some great stuff from all of you!)

If your store carries the Princess version of the Disney gift card, you can load it with any amount ($25 – $1000). If you want to get the full amount for this deal, you would load it with $500, and you will receive (5) $20 Catalinas.   It is possible that all stores may not carry this card, but I found it at one of my stores today.

One more thing worth mentioning: The prices of the Disney 3-Day Park Hoppers went up on 6/12/11, but I noticed that my Albertsons still has the passes out with the old pricing, so you may be able to pick those up to save money on the rate increase.

3-Day Park Hopper available at Albertsons (with old pricing)

  • $165 (ages 3-9)
  • $186 (ages 10+)

3-Day Park Hopper available online at Disneyland.com(with new prices)

  • $198 (ages 3-9)
  • $214 (ages 10+)

I mentioned yesterday that Albertsons (and their affiliate stores: Jewel, Acme, Cub, Farm Fresh & Shaws.) have a *HOT* promo that runs through June 18, 2011, where you will get a $20 Albertson’s Catalina when you buy $100 in gift cards.

I already had about $1000 saved up for our trip, so I am using that money to buy Disney gift cards that I will use to purchase our Disney tickets, food and souvenirs. I also picked up some restaurant gift cards too. I will be using the $20 certificates for our grocery budget for the week, which means I will be able to take the grocery money I would have spent and add it to our Disney fund! Woo Hoo!

I went to Albertsons yesterday to pick up some gift cards for our Disney trip, and here are some things I learned:

UPDATE: Check this post HERE for an update on another type of Disney gift card.

Albertsons sells Disney gift cards in the amount of $25 and $50. If you plan on using these to buy your theme park tickets online, they will allow 3 gift cards per transaction, and the remainder will need to be paid with a credit card.   I don’t believe there is a limit in the actual parks though, so you could just pick up your park tickets when you get there.   Please call to confirm, if you decide to go this route.

The current prices for Disneyland 3 day Park Hoppers when purchased online are as follows (prices will go up 6/12):

  • $165 (ages 3-9)
  • $186 (ages 10+)

UPDATE: Just found out Disney prices are going up on 6/12!!    You can find all the details on the price increase HERE.  If you have the money, you may want to buy your tickets now.

These gift cards can be used at the hotels, restaurants, and shops at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.  They can also be used at any Disney Store location and online at DisneyStore.com.   You can read all the FAQ pertaining to the Disney Gift Cards to answer any specific question you have.

You DO NOT want to purchase the Disneyland Park Hoppers at Albertsons, because they will not generate the $20 Catalina coupon. Since they are actual park passes, they are not considered gift cards.

Think about any restaurants you may eat at while you are there. We always have a special dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, so I picked up $100 in gift cards for our dinner.  Dinner with 7 people gets kind of expensive, if we go out to a nicer restaurant we easily spend $100.  OUCH!!

Here are some restaurants in the Anaheim area:

  • Cheesecake Factory (Anaheim GardenWalk)
  • McDonalds (across from the maingate)
  • Jamba Juice (Downtown Disney)
  • McCormick & Schmick’s (W Katella Ave) – Maegen from Sounds Fun Mom tipped me off to the fact that they have Happy Hour, where you can get a full size burgers and fries for only 3.00!!

If you plan on flying Southwest Airlines, you could also pick up several $100 Southwest gift cards. Southwest will allow you to use 3 gift cards and one credit card per transaction.  (Thanks to Angela from The Coupon Project for the info.)

Will you be driving or have a rental car?  There is a Shell Gas station on West Ball Rd, so you can use one of the gift cards to fill your tank.

When purchasing gift cards with this deal, you do need to keep in mind that the $20 Catalina will expire in one week from the time you receive it.   This gift card promo runs through 6/18.   You can receive up to (5) $20 Catalina’s per transaction, so there is no need to do multiple transactions, unless of course you are buying more than $500 in gift cards.

These ideas will work for anywhere you are vacationing, not just the Disney Theme Parks.   Do you plan on picking up some gift cards?  If so, which ones?

If you have a Disney trip planned, then it makes sense to check the Group Buy sites for deals in either Orlando or Anaheim/Los Angeles.   You can often find big discounts on hotels, restaurants or other attractions on those areas. This works well for ANY vacations you have planned, not just for trips to the Disney Theme Parks.

These are the sites that have hotel, restaurant and attraction deals in those areas that I try to check on a regular basis:

Eversave currently has a deal where you can get a hotel stay for 4 at a Disney Good Neighbor hotel for only $295 for 5 nights. This deal includes some extras like FREE breakfast and a free shuttle to Disney World. You do need to read the details of the deal closely, because there are certain requirements and fees.  This deal ends 6/13/11.  (Thanks Michelle!)

Keep your eyes out for a Groupon deal that has been offered on several occasions.  They offer a 7 night stay at a World Resorts International Location for only $399. (not currently available)   You will need to have flexible travel dates with this deal, but it is an amazing price. They have several resorts available in Kissimmee, FL, which is very close to Disney World.   I will be sure to let you know if it comes available again, it sells out quickly whenever it is offered.

Here are a couple of deals from Living Social that are now sold out or expired, but it just goes to show that there are some great deals to be found if you check them on a regular basis.

There are not only great hotel deals, but you can find great discounts to restaurants in the area or other fun attractions.  My husband and boys did the iFly Indoor Skydiving and had a blast!

I will be sure to let you know if I see any amazing deals that show up on any of the Group Buy sites.   Have you used Groupon or any other group buy site for your vacation travel?  I would love to hear about it!

I have shared several things you can do to save money on a Disney vacation, and today I am going to share some fun things you can do BEFORE you leave on your trip.

Make a Disney Countdown –  Part of the fun of the Disney trip is the anticipation, making a countdown is a fun way to countdown the days until you leave.  One of my boys made this countdown out of Lego’s, and I think it turned out great!

Have your Kids Earn Disney Dollars – We have our kids do some extra chores around the house, so they could earn “Disney Dollars”. We printed off some fake cash that we called “Disney Dollars”,  these “Disney Dollars” could be turned in for real cash before we left.   This gave our kids some of their own spending money for souvenirs.  Having their own spending money worked out well, because the kids really thought through their purchases, and they knew that once their money was gone – it was gone!

Order a FREE Disney DVD –  You can order a FREE Disney Vacation Planning DVD. This DVD gives you a complete tour of the 4 Theme Parks, 2 Water Parks and over 20 Resort hotels at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. It also includes a tour of the Disneyland Resort in California, including 2 enchanting Theme Parks and 3 Resort hotels.

It is fun to watch the DVD as a family, to help you really get excited about your upcoming trip.

Make your own Autograph Books – Getting autographs from the characters is one of the things that my kids really enjoy.  Making your own autograph books can save you some money, especially if you have more than one child.

What are some fun things your family does to prepare for a Disney trip?

DisneyFamily.com has a very creative (and inexpensive) Father’s day gift.   You can download a template, so you can print out a Daddyland Coupon Book, which would be perfect for your kids to give to their Dad.   We are huge Disney fans, so we will definitely be making this!

Thanks Couponing to Disney!

To celebrate Earth Day , the Disney Store is giving away a FREE reusable shopping bag when you bring in 5 plastic shopping bags to recycle on Friday, April 22nd.   Use their store locator to find the location near you.

The only location in Washington right now is at Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, but they are building a store at Bellevue Square (not open yet). Woot Woot! Limit one bag per guest.
