I was contacted to see if I would do a review of the Safeway home delivery service, and I agreed.   Shopping the site was very easy, if you sign up online you will automatically receive the club card prices, which is nice.   Here are some of my thoughts on the delivery service from Safeway.com

Meats & Produce

I made sure to order some fruit and meat so I could see how they did at picking out these items.  The fruit was perfect, the bananas were just how I like them, still a little green and not overripe.   The meat was great too, the sell by date was 3 days away, so I know the meat I received was fresh.    There was one thing that was different than I thought, I ordered (3) 1 lb meat selections, I was hoping for a total of 3 lbs of meat.  Instead, I received (3) 1.7 lbs of meat, which means I ended up with 5 lbs of meat instead of 3.  They focused on the number of packages instead of total pounds.  Now that I know how it work, I am sure if I just leave a memo on my order, I can make sure I get the correct amount.

Pricing

The prices online are similar to those you would find in the store.   If you plan on ordering something that is on sale you will need to make sure that it is delivered before the sale prices end.   If there is a sale price you will always see “offer valid for deliveries on or before” and then the expiration date.   The good news is that if you pick a delivery date after the sale ends, the checkout system will notify you, and ask you if you still want to order those items.   I made the mistake of adding a few items to my cart that were only valid for the weekend, so I was able to remove them from my cart so I wasn’t charged a higher price.

Delivery

They have a lot of different options when it comes to delivery time, I was able to choose a 2 hour window of noon – 2 pm and my deliver came at 12:20.  The delivery driver I had was super friendly, and he went over everything on the receipt for me. He even circled important numbers and told me that if I found any problems I could either call the 1-877 number and they would take care of it for me or if I was headed into a Safeway store, I could bring the item and my receipt and they would be able to do the return or exchange at the store.

My one small complaint

When my order arrived, the raspberries I ordered were in the same bag as the fresh meat I ordered.   I don’t know about you, but I don’t really want my fresh fruit and fresh meat touching, even if they are wrapped, I just don’t think it’s a good idea.

Overall Experience

Overall, I would say I was extremely pleased with the entire process,  especially the ease of placing my order and the wonderful delivery driver.   Honestly, I didn’t really expect anything different, Safeway is always the store where I receive the best customer service, even when I use coupons.  The cashiers usually cheer me on and congratulate me on my savings.   You’ve got to love that!

Since I am a frugal shopper, I am not certain I would use the home delivery on a regular basis mainly because you can’t use manufacturers coupons, but I am open to using it now and then when life gets busy and I don’t have time to get to the store. I wouldn’t hesitate using it again, especially if there is a discount code. Speaking of discount codes – I have one for you if you would like to give them a try!

I mentioned that Safeway has a new coupon policy HERE. They have come out with an update to their new policy. Here is the new update:

9. Safeway will accept valid Catalina manufacturer coupon that is issued to a customer by another retailer only if such coupon is for a specific item.

This new addition means that they will only accept Catalina coupons for specific products, and not dollar off Catalinas from stores. Examples of items they will not accept are Walgreens Register Rewards or Catalina’s for $5.00 off from Albertson’s.
