Who doesn’t need a few “fillers” to do with your kiddo’s this Summer?? This little experiment is one that you start and continue to check on for the next day and a half. It’s incredibly simple, but I’m surprised at how much my 8 year old enjoyed it! As a matter of fact, we’ve done it several times now to share with her friends as well!
You simply need:
- 17 oz. of white vinegar
- 1 uncooked egg
- Food coloring of your choice
- {More of each if you want to do different colors}
What you’ll do:
- In a cup place 16 oz of white vinegar ~ Carefully place your egg into the cup
- Let it sit…and sit… and sit…
- The egg may float a bit, but that’s o.k.
- You’ll see little bubbles start to form
- When you walk by the cup or go to check on it, go ahead and roll it over to keep all sides soaking
- Leave it overnight.
In the morning you’ll be able to “rub” off much of the outside. With your fingers, rub in circles, up and down and all around to wipe off layers of the “white shell”. I used my fingernail a little!
After I rubbed off all I could, I put it back in the vinegar {added a fresh 1 oz more} and let it sit for most of the day again. Around dinner time I repeated the rubbing process and all of the white “shell” was gone! What was left was a little rubber like looking ball with a yolk!
My daughter actually held it about 10 inches above the counter and dropped it~ YIKES! But no nasty burst!~ It bounced!! Again and again…
To have a bit more fun we moved it to a glass of water with several drops of purple food coloring. Not only did it turn purple, but got bigger! Still nice and rubbery feeling, but it grew!
To save me the mess of cleaning this little guy up when he did decide to burst, my daughter took it outside to see how high she could go. Unfortunately the fun was over in one drop! Not sure if it was the texture of the road, but it didn’t like it!
We’ve stuck to the counter ever since! So go ahead and have some fun experimenting! It’s been a winner with the kids around here! We originally found this experiment at Imagination Station!
Enjoy!
